What is the Phuket Big Buddha?

The Big Buddha in Phuket was built out of respect for Buddhism, serving as a temple and a place for people to find peace. Construction began in 2002 and it took over a decade to complete, funded entirely through donations.

Upon completion, it was granted the name Phraphutthamingmongkhol-akenagakhiri, meaning “Happiness on Top of Nagakerd Mountain”. The Big Buddha takes on a Maravijaya attitude, a relaxed, seated position with one hand towards the ground. It’s located 400 metres above sea level, offering incredible views over Phuket Town, the Andaman Sea, and the surrounding islands.

Made out of concrete and covered in white marble, the Big Buddha is 45 metres high with a width of 25.45 metres. This makes it the third tallest statue in Thailand! There’s little wonder why it’s on our list of 14 Top-Rated Attractions and Things to Do in Phuket as well as our list of Must-See Things in Phuket as Recommended by Locals.
