Exploring Phuket’s Hidden Beaches: A Local’s Guide

When most people think of Phuket, they may picture Patong Beach’s pulsing nightlife scene or the sun-drenched sands of the ever-popular Kata Beach. But just north of those busy strips, in the peaceful Thalang District, lies another side of the island — one that’s quieter, wilder, and deeply connected to nature. Close to Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, you’ll find a collection of lesser-known beaches on the west coast, where locals go to unwind and the rhythm of life feels untouched by tourism.

If you want to venture off the beaten path, we’ve created this local’s guide to Phuket’s hidden beaches, which you can easily visit alongside one of our Phuket Elephant Tours and Activities. Keep reading for our top tips, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about our tours!

Layan Beach

Layan Beach sits at the northern end of bustling Bangtao Beach, but it feels like a world away. Shielded by trees, Layan is where locals come for peaceful swims or sunset yoga. The beach curves gently around a quiet bay where a small river meets the sea, creating a tranquil lagoon that’s perfect for paddleboarding or simply floating in the calm water.

At low tide, you can walk across to a small sandbar island, offering views of the Andaman Sea and the forested hills beyond. Despite its pristine beauty, Layan remains uncrowded, and you might find only a handful of other people here. There are no amenities, and only a few restaurants and resorts a short walk away. Its unique location and rustic appeal are what make it one of our 7 Most Beautiful Beaches of Phuket!

Haad Laem Sing

Tucked between Surin and Kamala Beach, Haad Laem Sing is one of Phuket’s most photogenic spots. From the viewpoint above the beach, you’ll have sweeping views of the lush island and Andaman Sea. On the beach itself, you’ll be immersed in unspoilt beauty, surrounded by verdant greenery and turquoise waters.

Haad Laem Sing Beach can only be accessed by boat or via a coastal  jungle trail, but you’ll be well and truly rewarded. With few people and even fewer amenities, it will be like stepping into your private slice of paradise.

Laem Son (Pineapple Beach)

Laem Son — affectionately known as Pineapple Beach — is one of Phuket’s most underrated treasures. It can only be reached on foot or by boat, making it a truly hidden gem. You can take a short 15-20 minute hike to access it at low tide, or take a boat ride from Surin or Bangtao Beach. While it may take a bit more effort to reach than other beaches, Laem Son is worth it for its serene atmosphere, sparkling waters, and excellent snorkelling opportunities. There are some vendors selling small bites and drinks, but we’d recommend packing a picnic to make the most of this secluded beach.

Hua Beach

Hua Beach is so hidden, even some long-time Phuket residents don’t know about it! It’s surreptitiously located along Millionaire’s Row, the villa-lined headland between Kamala and Patong Beach. While accessible by car, you have to keep an eye out for the entrance.

Once you step onto the beach, you’ll find a small, golden stretch of sand decorated with rocks and emerald trees. There’s just one beach bar, a few bobbing fishing boats, and a couple of chairs for you to sit back and relax. For a day of suntanning, reading, or even snoozing in the sun, away from jet skiers and kite surfers, this is the place to be. However, if you are looking for a bit of action on your beach day, read our guide to 9 Water Sports in Phuket You Should Not Miss!

Nai Thon Beach

Nai Thon is perhaps the most accessible of Phuket’s less touristic beaches, yet it still retains its quiet charm. Located at the southern end of Sirinat National Park, it’s framed by green hills and casuarina trees that sway in the ocean breeze. Despite its long, open stretch of sands and close proximity to resorts, Nai Thon Beach is often uncrowded. There are numerous food vendors nearby, so you can grab a bite to eat or a delicious ice cream to enjoy while admiring the scenery. And with its gentle waves, this beach is ideal for some leisurely swimming.
