The Laguna Phuket Marathon
The Laguna Phuket Marathon is a key fixture on Thailand’s annual sporting calendar. It’s the largest sports event in Phuket, attracting athletes and spectators from around the globe. As a certified marathon, it’s considered a pathway to the illustrious Boston Marathon. Despite this, the event is open to people at all stages of their running journey. With a half-marathon, full marathon, as well as 5km, 10km, and junior races, everyone can find a race of their choice.
Usually held annually in June, the full marathon route takes runners through the quieter northern areas of Phuket, from Laguna Phuket to Sirinat National Park. An early morning start time ensures runners avoid the peak heat, while supporters and volunteers can enjoy the vibrant and exciting atmosphere. A weekend event, the Laguna Phuket Marathon can almost feel like a festival!
Outside of the marathon, June presents the perfect time to experience the island before the monsoon season. While there is a higher chance of brief tropical rain showers, they are often short-lived and followed by clear skies. This time of year is ideal for travellers who prefer a slower pace, fewer crowds, and lush green scenery as the backdrop to their explorations. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon is one of Asia’s longest-running and most prestigious triathlon events. Established in the early 1990s, the race has built a global reputation for its demanding course and unique tropical setting, earning it the nickname “The Race of Legends.”
What sets this triathlon apart is its distinctive format and terrain. Athletes begin with an open-water swim in the Andaman Sea before transitioning to a cycling route that winds through rolling countryside. The final run takes place around the Laguna Phuket resort complex, where spectators add to the energetic air. However, the event is not solely reserved for elite athletes. In addition to the triathlon, there is also a shorter sprint triathlon, duathlon, and open water swim, allowing more people to partake!
Taking place in November, it’s an excellent time to visit Phuket beyond the race. The weather is warm but less humid, sea conditions are calmer, and the island is coming alive after the monsoon season. You can enjoy beach time, cultural sightseeing in Phuket Old Town, boat trips to nearby islands, and nature-based activities such as our private guided adventure hike in Phuket!
