For many travellers, visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, few know what it entails. Given the popularity of elephant tourism in Thailand, some people may expect that they could touch, ride, or even bathe with the elephants. But at a true sanctuary like Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, that’s not the case.
Here, we rescue elephants from lives of exploitation, giving them a second chance to live freely and naturally, with little interference from people. But we still give people the unique opportunity to see the gentle giants up close in a safe and respectful environment through our Phuket Elephant Tours and Activities. In this guide, we break down what it’s like to visit Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, and what you can expect from a truly ethical elephant sanctuary. Keep reading to learn more, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

What Makes Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary?
At Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, we follow a strict hands-off policy. This is for the health, safety, and well-being of both our guests and our elephants. Visitors can simply observe our elephants as they go about their day in a safe, natural environment.
All of our elephants come from exploitative industries such as logging or entertainment, where they have suffered neglect and abuse. But here, they roam freely, eat nutritious food, and receive expert veterinary care. For our work, we have received a number of accreditations and awards. If you’re interested in learning more, read our guide on what is an ethical elephant sanctuary.

What Can’t Visitors Do at our Phuket Elephant Sanctuary?
To protect the physical and emotional well-being of the elephants, certain activities are not permitted at Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve. While these may be offered elsewhere in Thailand and be what draws people to elephant tourism, they are harmful and unethical for a variety of reasons.
Here, visitors are not allowed to:
- Directly feed the elephants (guests place the elephant food they prepare onto special feeding trays for the elephants to eat from)
- Touch or pet the elephants
- Ride elephants
- Bathe or swim with elephants
These restrictions help prevent stress in the elephants, reinforce natural behaviours, and ensure they are not placed in situations that prioritise human entertainment over animal welfare. You can find out more with our blogs about why bathing with elephants is unhygienic and unethical, and why you shouldn’t ride elephants in Thailand.
Instead, our Phuket elephant tours offer a unique opportunity to observe, learn about, and appreciate these magnificent creatures in a respectful way. Keep reading for what you absolutely can do on one of our tours!

What to Expect on the 90-Minute Elephant Adventure in Phuket?
Our Short 90-Minute Elephant Adventure in Phuket is ideal for visitors with limited time who still want an ethical and educational experience. During the tour, guests will observe our elephants as they move naturally through the sanctuary, foraging, socialising, and blissfully bathing in pools.
During the tour, you’ll learn about the individual stories of the elephants, the reasons they were rescued, and how they are cared for today. Visitors also learn about elephant behaviour, diet, and social dynamics, offering valuable insight into what responsible elephant care involves.
The experience includes a gentle nature walk alongside the elephants, where guests walk at a careful distance while the elephants choose their own path through the landscape!

What’s Included in the Half-Day Elephant Adventure in Phuket?
The Half-Day Elephant Adventure in Phuket includes everything offered in the 90-minute tour, with additional activities that allow for a deeper understanding of conservation and local culture. Alongside observing the elephants and joining the nature walk, guests can take part in a Thai cooking demonstration that introduces traditional flavours and cooking techniques.
The tour also includes a visit to the elephant dung recycling centre, where you can learn how to transform elephant waste into eco-friendly paper products, as well as a vitamin ball preparation demonstration, where you’ll learn more about the elephants’ diets and how we supplement them.
With more time on-site, the half-day experience offers a more immersive experience at the sanctuary and, importantly, more time spent watching our elephants lead peaceful lives!
