Things to Do in Karon Beach, Phuket

Bangtao Beach is on our sanctuary’s doorstep, so we’re huge fans of the area’s night markets, shopping malls, beach clubs, resorts, and many cultural experiences. When combined with our ethical elephant activities in Phuket, there’s no better place to enjoy the complete Phuket experience.

As such, our picks for the best things to do in Karon Beach focus on attractions and experiences for visitors looking for a charming, family-friendly day out.

Visit the Serene Karon Temple (Wat Suwan Khirikhet)

Prepare to be enchanted by the tranquillity, spirituality, and beautiful architecture of Karon Temple, known locally as Wat Suwan Khirikhet. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this Buddhist temple is a haven of serenity.

Wander freely through the temple any day of the week and admire its ornate structure, intricate carvings, and paintings. Consider making a small donation as it’s always appreciated and a kind gesture.

We chose Wat Suwan Khirikhet as one of our must-see temples in Phuket.

Local Tip: Embrace the local customs by dressing modestly and removing your shoes before entering the temple. Engage with the friendly monks or take a moment for quiet reflection amidst the peaceful surroundings.

Enjoy a Fun-Filled Round at Dino Park Mini Golf!

Step into a prehistoric wonderland at Dino Park Mini Golf, where fun meets archaeology! This themed, 18-hole mini-golf course is an absolute delight for both kids and adults. Tee off amidst life-sized dinosaurs, cascading waterfalls, lush greenery, and even a volcano!

Dino Park Mini Golf is located at the southern end of Karon Beach. It takes around 40 minutes to complete a round and, while challenging in places, is suitable for children.

Local Tip: Make the most of your visit by arriving in the late afternoon to experience the course both in daylight and under the enchanting glow of the evening lights.

Join a Game with Phuket Beach Volleyball Club

Did you know that Karon Beach is the only place in Phuket that has beach volleyball nets set up for public use every day? It’s no surprise that this beach has become a hub for this exciting sport!

Locals and tourists join in games here most evenings and they’re a great opportunity to have fun and meet new people.

The nets are busiest in the evenings as the temperature eases off. Playing in the heat of the day becomes more of an endurance challenge than a fun activity!

And the good news is that Thai cuisine is a delicious way to refuel after you’ve worked up an appetite, be it playing volleyball or on any other adventure on our island. Read our picks for the best Thai food places in Phuket!

Local Tip: Join one of the club’s open sessions or clinics to brush up on your skills or simply enjoy a fun-filled game by the sparkling shores of Karon Beach. These are stunning surroundings for a game of volleyball!

Bask in the Golden Glow of the Karon Beach Naga Statue

Marvel at the majestic Karon Beach Naga Statue, a symbol of mythical significance and cultural heritage. There’s still some debate about whether the serpent-like statue depicts a golden dragon or a snake.

If it’s a snake, then it’s a naga, a creature from Buddhist mythology that is essentially a giant king cobra. However, if it’s a dragon, it’s the mythical Chinese sea dragon Hai Leng Ong. According to legend, this creature went to sleep and subsequently formed the island of Phuket.

Regardless, Thai people come here to pay respect and make offerings.

Local Tip: Capture the best photos during the golden hours of sunrise or sunset, when the statue is beautifully illuminated by the changing hues of the sky.

Take it Easy on Karon Beach

Last but certainly not least, indulge in the sheer beauty and relaxation offered by Karon Beach itself. It may be smaller than beautiful Bangtao Beach, but it’s still a pleasure to sink your toes into the soft, powdery sands, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters, and bask in the warmth of the tropical sun.

Local Tip: For a serene experience, head towards the northern end of the beach, away from the bustling crowds, and relish the peaceful ambience.
